Job Description

The Tang Guides program is an exciting program that introduces students to the Tang and the museum world, trains them how to be gallery ambassadors and tour guides, trains them how to talk about art, and gives them valuable real-world experiences interacting with visitors. Tang Guides are an integral part of our front-line visitor services team, ensuring positive experiences for all visitors.

Responsibilities  include:

  • Serving as roaming docents in the galleries: Tang Guides provide visitors with additional information about the Tang and specific exhibitions as they roam the galleries

  • Providing security in the exhibitions: Tang Guides maintain the safety of the artwork on display and ensure visitors follow both museum and exhibition requirements

  • Staffing the museumâ™s Visitor Services Desk: Tang Guides answer the main museum phone line, check in visitors to the museum, and perform other administrative tasks as assigned

  • Offering tours as requested: Tang Guides lead tours of the museum to individuals and groups who request them

  • Attending regular in-person training workshops and tours

The students filling these positions must be available to work evenings and weekends with regularity. They will receive substantive paid on-the-job training, which will cover proper museum protocols/procedures, information on how to lead museum tours, and instruction on ways to connect with visitors. Tang Guides will also have opportunities to interact with curators and artists to gain greater insight into Tang exhibitions.

This position requires a mature, reliable individual with excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge and appreciation of art/art history, especially contemporary art, is helpful, but not required. This position requires long periods of standing and availability on evenings and weekends.

We strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented groups to apply.

Applicants must upload a cover letter, resume, and a list of three references.

Applications will be accepted through August 26, 2024. But do not delay in applying--interviews will take place on a rolling basis and begin earlier in August.

About Skidmore College

Skidmore is a highly selective liberal arts college with a reputation for its creative approaches to just about everything. With its relatively small size and student-faculty ratio, the College is a close-knit academic community. Skidmore is known for its faculty of teacher-scholars devoted to the instruction and mentoring of undergraduates; approximately 2,400 talented men and women from some 47 states and 46 countries. In the universe of selective, private liberal arts colleges, Skidmore's distinctiveness is expressed in the statement that "Creative Thought Matters". This idea reflects not only the historical strength of the College's programs in the fine and performing arts but also the understanding that creativity is required for achievement in any area of human endeavor. The city of Saratoga Springs is widely recognized as one of America's great communities. It is located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, within a three-to-four-hour drive from New York City, Boston or Montreal. Travel & Leisure calls Saratoga Springs one of "America's Greatest Main Streets" as well as "one of the best college towns in the nation," Money Magazine says it's one of the nation's top 100 ... places to live, and Princeton Review describes it as a "perfect college town." It's a community rich in history and tradition. Famed mineral waters, a Revolutionary War battlefield, and the nation's oldest thoroughbred racetrack represent portions of that history. Also, it's a community of arts and culture. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is the summer home to the New York City Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, and a performing venue for top rock and jazz musicians. The Skidmore College community awaits your arrival, so if you welcome challenges and are interested in making a difference, come join us!
