Job Description

Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with 270 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume as much as they want, anytime, anywhere and can change their plans at any time.

Netflix is the leading provider of streaming video, much of the content being original features, shorts, series, documentaries, comedy specials and unscripted content.

Across all types of projects, Netflix strives to optimize content quality and longevity without compromising efficiency and creative vision. As part of the Production Technology and Operations team, Production Technologists aim to drive the adoption of practices that favor technical quality and predictable results on Netflix Productions. From on-set through to final delivery, we offer direct support to production crews as well as internal and external physical production, post, and visual effects teams.

By staying up-to-date with the most advanced developments in professional and consumer technology, our Technologists offer expertise in key areas of motion picture production and post-production - cameras, sound, data management, image science, dailies, editorial, color correction, deliverables, archival, VFX imaging and more! The Nonfiction Technologist serves as the subject matter expert consultant on workflows for documentaries, unscripted shows, and ‘live-to-tape’ productions.

As part of the Production Technology & Operations team, you will:

  • Support Netflix Original productions through technical consultation, onsite visits, and targeted engagement throughout the production lifecycle to remove technical barriers and empower creative flexibility.
  • Work closely with both Netflix Production and Innovation teams, informing them on the practicality and go-to-market strategy for emerging / new technologies and imaging workflows on Netflix productions.
  • Contribute to designing, testing, and implementing cloud-based production technologies.
  • Consult for complex imaging and workflow pipeline issues that impact production costs, time, and delivery to service.
  • Engage with internal and external teams on both Netflix’s technical specifications and production best practices and why they exist, setting our partners up for success in areas such as image capture, scaling, color management, and interchange.
  • Evaluate challenges and opportunities for partner self-sufficiency in support of Netflix productions, both in-region and in collaboration with global teams.
  • Maintain currency on filmmaking trends and new technologies in production workflows.
  • Introduce key stakeholders (creatives, production executives, partners) to emerging production technologies, increasing their knowledge of “what’s possible.”
  • Represent the Netflix Production Technology and Operations team at industry functions, conferences, committee meetings, etc.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience of practical workflow and imaging experience applied toward actual productions either in technical on-set or post-production roles, with a focus across Nonfiction genres.
  • Strong customer orientation and helpful, collaborative demeanor.
  • An ability to translate technical jargon and filmmaking workflows into practical, applicable, and actionable directions.
  • Extensive understanding of broadcast, image capture, production, and post-production workflows.
  • A strong desire to bring cutting-edge innovative technology and techniques to elevate the Nonfiction space.
  • Understanding of common industry tools and production practices.
  • Willingness and aptitude to educate both internal and external entities with varying degrees of knowledge in your areas of expertise.
  • Ability to develop long-standing relationships with production and post-production operational teams.
  • Ability to communicate and interact on a global level and frame projects with sensitivity to cultural diversity and industrial variation.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and the bodies that ratify them.
  • Experience in and relationships with technology solutions, equipment, and service vendors across production and post.
  • A passion for sound and the moving image.
  • Ability to thrive in the Netflix culture centered around feedback, transparency, and accountability.
  • This position is based in Los Angeles, CA
