Job Description

OPS Geologist II pending reclassification to an OPS Environmental Specialist III State of Florida

Department of Environmental Protection

Our Organization and Mission:

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the state’s lead agency for environmental management and stewardship - protecting our air, water and land. The vision of DEP is to create strong community partnerships, safeguard Florida’s natural resources and enhance its ecosystem.

The Work You Will Do :

This Environmental Specialist III position is part of the Geologic Samples and Acquisition Management (GSAM) section of the Florida Geological Survey (FGS). The position is supported by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) yearly contract. The FGS has a well-established relationship with SWFWMD and has been describing lithologic samples for them for many years. Lithologic sample descriptions of drill core and cuttings, formation descriptions, and minor report writing will be the major components of this position’s duties. These job duties will involve a wide array of geologic concepts, such as Florida Stratigraphy, Hydrogeology, Sedimentation and Stratigraphy, Carbonate Geology, and Borehole Geophysics. Although the primary focus is centered on detailed lithologic descriptions and formation picks on drill core/cuttings, there will be ample opportunities for local geology field trips, fieldwork on active drill sites, and assisting other ongoing FGS projects. Most importantly, the work that this position will be involved with will help the FGS and SWFWMD gain a better understanding of the subsurface characteristics within the water management district area, as well as the state of Florida.

The Difference You Will Make:

The Florida Geological Survey is committed to providing geoscience information that protects the public health and safety of citizens and supports environmental stewardship to protect Florida's diverse ecosystems. Decisions about balancing human activity with protecting the environment require new geologic studies and interpretations, which are all accomplished through detailed field work and geologic mapping of both the ground and subsurface. The geologic information that this position will help ascertain and interpret will, ultimately, assist the FGS and SWFWMD in characterizing the subsurface geology and hydrogeology in southwest Florida.

How You Will Grow:

DEP encourages its leaders to constantly innovate and seek efficiencies. We believe in supporting and encouraging you as you take on important and often complex projects while offering you the opportunity to gain valuable experience quickly.

Where You Will Work:

Tallahassee  Tallahassee, Florida’s Capitol City, lined with rolling hills, oak trees, and canopied roads combines old world charm with a modern pace of life. Home to two major universities as well as state government, Tallahassee is a mid-sized city in the heart of Florida’s Big Bend. Tallahassee is a highly desirable location for both those seeking their first job or those ready to enter the next exciting chapter in their career.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected to be aware of and abide by the Department’s standards of conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

The Hydrogeologic Data Section of SWFWMD conducts core drilling at well sites throughout the 16-county area to support a variety of SWFWMD projects and has been contracting FGS since 2005 for lithologic sample descriptions and formation picks. One such project is the Regional Observation and Monitor-well Program (ROMP) that was established in 1974 in response to the need for hydrogeologic information of groundwater systems within the SWFWMD for the management of water and water-related resources. The ROMP consists of a network of well sites constructed to define the geology, hydrogeology, hydraulic properties, and water quality of SWFWMD. The lithologic samples collected from core drilling are used to determine aquifer hydrogeology, hydraulic properties, and rock geochemistry. Accurate descriptions of the lithologic samples are crucial for determining these properties.

The duties of this position include describing lithologic descriptions of drill core, cuttings, and split-spoon samples from the SWFWMD into our Geodes borehole database. This involves creating a detailed notation of geologic samples where information regarding depth, rock type, color code, porosity, and accessory minerals are all identified. Additionally, lithologic information such as sedimentary structures and fossil assemblages are also critical when generating lithologic descriptions. Furthermore, all of the lithologic information compiled in these sample descriptions will aid the incumbent to make stratigraphic formation picks, which is critical for understanding Florida’s subsurface geology. The incumbent will utilize Leica and/or Amscope binocular microscopes for their SWFWMD descriptions.

Depending on work timelines and deliverable due dates, if other geologic work emerges outside the scope of the aforementioned project that the incumbent is interested in, various accommodations can be made to ensure the employee continues to reinforce their knowledge, skills, and abilities within the geological sciences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the following: terminology, principles and techniques of geological research and mapping; procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis; methods of data collection; Florida’s geology, mineral resources, and ground water. Skilled in organizing work details and prioritizing workload. Skilled in the use of the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe, and GIS software. Ability to learn field sampling methods. Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain lithologic description notes, use microscope equipment and materials, and perform lithologic tests and analyses on drill core/cuttings samples. Ability to properly handle and box core samples. Ability to lift core boxes and drilling materials weighing 50 pounds or more. Ability to interpret different drilling methods and operations with regards to lithologic samples. Ability to travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor of Science degree, or higher, in geology or related field from an accredited academic institution; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this posting, for a total of four years. Must have a valid Driver License.

Preferred Qualifications:

Florida Geologist in Training (GIT) license is preferred, but not required.
