Duties

NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) sets the definitive U.S. standards for nearly every kind of measurement employed in commerce and research, sometimes across more than 20 orders of magnitude. This position is in PML's Time Realization and Distribution Group, which operates and continuously analyzes a large ensemble of commercial atomic clocks to provide the U.S. with official sources of time and frequency. If hired as an Electronics Technician for this group, you will:


At the ZT-II Level

  • Provide basic technical support of the equipment and systems at WWVH
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting (to the module/assembly level), adjustment, and basic repairs under the technical guidance of the engineering leader
  • Follow verbal and written guidelines that are clear, straightforward, require little interpretation, and allow for only minor deviations
  • When questions arise, seek the support of the Supervisory Engineer and other subject-matter experts to clarify and resolve the issue.
  • Contribute to the care of the general facility to ensure a good operating environment

At the ZT-III Level
  • Provide highly specialized technical support of the equipment and systems at WWVH
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting (to the component level), adjustment, and advanced repairs
  • Monitor, document, and report equipment and system performance
  • Contribute to the care of the general facility to ensure a good operating environment
  • Employ a variety of complex precision instruments, equipment, systems, and methods
  • Resolve novel operational problems not covered by precedents
  • Exercise independent judgment in selecting appropriate techniques, policies, guidelines, or accepted practices
  • Work with the engineering leader on the fabrication of new circuits and equipment

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:



To Qualify for ZT-II: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level (or ZT-I at NIST) . Specialized experience is defined as experience in the operation and maintenance of electronic equipment.



OR


Successful completion of (a) all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology, or (b) 3 years of study in an accredited (by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) curriculum in electronics, or (c) a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above. At least 12 of the 24 semester hours must have been in electronics courses.



OR


Combination of education and experience.



To Qualify for ZT-III: One year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 (ZT-II at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as experience in maintaining and troubleshooting digital and analog circuits, as well as familiarity with common electronic test equipment, such as voltmeters and oscilloscopes.



OR


Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree directly related to the work of the position.



OR


A combination of experience and education directly related to the work of the position.
